Types of Traffic Schools

Traffic school is a refresher course for licensed drivers that help reiterate the basics of driver safety and reviews existing traffic laws. Traffic school is used to re-educate drivers who committed traffic violations of safe driving practices. The benefit of the traffic course is a reduction in violation points upon successful completion. Keeping a clean driving record is well worth the money spent on traffic school, especially because it helps minimize the costs of car insurance.

Three Types of Traffic School

There are a variety of traffic schools in each state. Each state has a different set of requirements based on their unique populations and geographies. Across all the states, there are at least three varieties of traffic or driving schools.

Online Traffic Classes

Online classes are today’s classroom. The student learns in a virtual classroom which may be the apartment, the job, the park, or even the beach. Assignments are computerized and the student takes the tests as many times as needed to pass. This method is usually more flexible and cost effective, especially with work and family obligations.

Conventional Classroom

Conventional classes are classes in a traditional school or auditorium type setting that one attends for a prescribed number of classes. As the name implies, one has to sit in a traditional class, listening and interacting with the instructor.

Home Study Classes

In a home study class, the students are responsible for obtaining their own textbooks. They must figure out their own study schedule in order to pass the standardized test at the end of the self-study course.

Find a Traffic Course That Works For You

There are a few options when it comes to traffic school. Some classes are geared toward new drivers and others are specifically for those who have received a traffic violation. In either case, be sure to find a course the meets your specific needs.

Basic Driver Educational Classes

When it comes to basic driver education classes, the programs are aimed at a person of any age who had never held a driver’s license before, and plan to obtain a first driver’s permit. These basic courses provide attendees with the knowledge and skills required to obtain a state driver’s license. Here students are taught conventionally in a classroom environment that is focused on a controlled, supervised driving experience. This forms the theoretical part of the program, including rules and driving laws. Road classes are also a major component of the basic driver education classes. Every state requires some number of driving hours to be completed before being allowed to take any driving tests.

Defensive Driving Schools

This type of school is generally attended by drivers who have committed some sort of violation. These students have often been assigned by a court for a traffic violation, though voluntary attendance is also possible when one wants to reduce fines or cut down their driving record points. These courses also help traffic violators in California prevent their insurance rates from rising due to prior violations.

Comedy Traffic School

Comedy traffic schools are an entertaining way for people to teach traffic law. This method of learning is fun, convenient, and cost effective. Here instructors provide not just training, but entertainment as well.

Insurance Discount Programs

These courses are usually aimed at people of 55 years of age and over. They re-educate participants on basic driving skills, safety techniques, and traffic laws specific to California. People taking this type of a course are eligible for insurance discounts upon course completion.

Protective Driving Schools

As the name suggests these courses are aimed at people interested in executive protection, bodyguard duty, or anti-terrorism. This is a specialized class that focuses on advanced driving techniques that teach drivers to identify potentially dangerous situations and react to them accordingly. Escape and aggressive maneuvers are taught in these types of classes. Whether your goal is reducing your insurance costs, becoming a safer member of the driving community, or pursuing a high-performance driving career, there is a driving school available by some means that teaches the necessary skills and safe driving tips. Always remember that driving is a privilege, and safety is the number one priority of any traffic school.
